The illusion of learning

Imagine that you are about to start studying in your study environment. You locate the subject book and start reading on a particular topic. Five pages later you consider that it is sufficient for that subject and you move on.

15 minutes have passed since you started studying. Beyond some brief interruption product of your phone that rang with notifications about 10 times and you had to occupy yourself, the rest of the time you were reading. You go on like this for a long time and read all the topics that you had to learn for that study day. Hours later you close the books and optimistically say out loud:

- Excellent! Today has been a productive day! I have managed to study a lot of subjects!

The next day, the practical part of that subject. There, you need to learn to solve a specific type of problem. You look at the explanation of the book where they show you how it's done. You read it, you examine it in detail for more than half an hour and you say:

- Oh, how easy! I know how to do it!

A few days later you go to take the evaluation and discover that you know absolutely nothing. You deliver a half blank exam on the theoretical part and a lot of accounts that do not answer anything for the practical exercise.

Is anything about this situation familiar to you?

The example that I put here is a bit extreme but it synthesizes what the illusion of competence in learning is for ISC Specimen MCQs Sample Paper Class 12 For Semester 1 Board Exams 2021-22.

The illusion of competence in learning

The illusion of competition occurs when you think you are learning but are not learning. It is all an illusion generated by the environment, the elements you use when studying and your actions.

In other words, just sitting down to study and read doesn't make the concepts stick with you. Neither does spending two hours in front of books.

Examples of illusions of competence in learning

Now that you know what it is, I am sure that what you would like to know is how to identify these illusions so as not to experience them.

In reality, each student can have their illusions. As each one studies differently, it makes sense that each one deceives himself differently.

However, the most common illusions of competition include the following:

  • Read without reading: it is when you have been reading and, in a moment, you realize that it has been five paragraphs that you have not been paying attention to the text since you were thinking about something else.
  • Underline: is when you read and underline, but you are not paying attention to what you underline. This is one of the most common illusions.
  • Looking at problem-solving: As in the example I described above, seeing how someone solves a problem and even understanding the mechanism does not make you know it.

How to overcome illusions of competence in learning?

Putting you to the test.

If you are reading or underlining a text, you have to stop every so often and try to prove to yourself that you are remembering it. Then you have to keep moving forward to learn what comes next. But after a while, you must return to the above and try to remember.

I'm not talking about studying by heart! It is not about retaining the sentences literally, but the concept that you need to get from the text.

In the case of studying how to solve a problem, you have to practice solving it. One, two, three, a hundred times! As many times as necessary.

For both texts and practical problems, after trying to remember, you have to go back to studying the next day as a review. Then let a day go by and go back to studying. You have to space the study in time. In those periods when you do not study, your brain internally makes the necessary connections for you to learn the subject.
